Marching Band Tattoo

I was approached by a friend to create a black and white tattoo, about the size index card, with minimum shading. The tattoo had to include her two main instruments (the baritone horn and the bari sax), UC Davis’ old block “CA” logo, and sheet music of the UCD Fight Song.

The designs (above) were mocked-up in Photoshop, cleaned in Illustrator, and finalized with music notes in Photoshop again.

Per my client's request, I created two final versions, one with music and one without, in case the small detail of the music notes proved too painful or difficult for the tattoo artist to include.

Design Development

The first three images are the initial Photoshop mock-ups I sent to the client before working on the final version. For the final version, she asked me to use the left diagonal alignment of the first design with the overlapping instruments of the third design. She also asked me to use silhouettes or outlines, but no shading as "shading equals pain."

The fourth image (rightmost) was the last rough version I sent the client. Following her request for more detail on the instruments, I proceeded to make the final versions as seen above.
